Celiac Disease
Overview: Celiac disease is when your body cannot digest gluten. The gluten causes the small intestine to become inflamed and can damage or destroy the villa that line the small intestine. Celiac disease does not have to run in the family in order for a person to have the disease. Celiac disease is more common in people with type one diabetes. Some signs and symptoms are bloating, osteoporosis, heartburn, and constipation 1.

Signs and Symptoms: Signs and symptoms of celiac disease are weight loss, fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain, headache, joint pain, rash and diarrhea. If a person has these symptoms it does not always mean a person has the disease 1. Celiac disease is not fatal if taken care of. If a person goes on a gluten free diet then the person will be fine. If the person does not go on a gluten free diet then lymphoma and other disease that could be life threatening. A person with celiac disease can live just as long as someone without the disease as long as they go on a gluten free diet 2.

Society and Culture: It affects mostly women which causes the women to have a higher chance to die early or to catch another disease caused by the disease. When you have celiac disease you are at greater risk to get other complications such as heart failure.

History: Celiac disease was named by a Greek physician named Aretaeus in the first century. The disease was named after the Greek word koiliakos which means abdomen. In the 19th century Dr. Matt Baillie discovered that the disease came from eating only rice. In the 1920s Sidney Hass came up with a diet called the banana diet. The banana diet was a diet in which bread, crackers and potatoes were eliminated from the person's diet. He found out that the children on the diet survived but the kids not on the diet died. In 1953 Dr. Willem Karel Dicke discovered that from eating wheat protein caused the disease. In the 1960s the only way to test for the disease was a biopsy. If the results proved that a person had celiac disease then they would be put on a gluten free diet. In 1990 celiac disease was recognized as an autoimmune disease linked to gluten sensitivity and other autoimmune diseases 3.
